Talented young racing driver Will Jenkins has a title assault in his sights as he prepares to tackle his second season in the Michelin Ginetta Junior Championship, starting this weekend at Thruxton (08/09 May).
Jenkins makes a return to the most prestigious junior series in the UK with reigning champions Elite Motorsport, with the 16 year old determined to build on a strong 2020 campaign and a hugely positive pre-season testing programme and battle at the head of the field this year.
After competing in karting at a British and European level, Jenkins made the transition to car-racing last year in the Ginetta Juniors. Initially competing as a privateer entrant, Jenkins made his mark early on with an impressive breakthrough rookie class podium finish in the third event of the year.
The Staffordshire based racer went on to move to Elite Motorsport for the final three events of the season and the new partnership immediately yielded a second rookie class podium at Croft. He went on to end the campaign with four overall top six results.
Less than two weeks after the season ended, the Asset Alliance Group, Hopkins Motorsport, Corroconsult and Digraph supported driver had already turned his focus to 2021 by beginning an extensive pre-season testing programme.
Showing promising pace throughout, Jenkins laid down a marker to his rivals by topping the timesheets in the official pre-event test at Thruxton last month. With more front-running times following at Snetterton, he’s in high spirits heading into the season opener.
Will Jenkins: “I’m very excited for the start of the new Ginetta Junior Championship season. I learnt a lot during the 2020 campaign and have built on that experience during a really productive pre-season testing programme with Elite Motorsport. “We started at Calafat in Spain, and have since tested at nearly all the UK-based circuits. I particularly enjoyed a three-day run at Oulton Park in February, while I’m delighted to have finished towards the top in both of the official Ginetta tests in recent weeks. “Both the team and I now feel confident we will be able to work together in order to get the absolute best from both me and the car. The aim is to challenge for this year’s title and I can’t wait to get racing again this weekend and put all the hard work over the winter into practice.” The 2021 Michelin Ginetta Junior Championship begins with two races around the fastest circuit in the UK, Thruxton, this weekend (08/09 May). The second race on Sunday afternoon, scheduled for 15:55, will be televised live on ITV4 and the ITV Hub.
