It was a case of déjà vu for Will Jenkins in the second round of his debut Porsche Carrera Cup GB season, as brilliant class pole position pace once again sadly didn’t lead to the race results deserved at Snetterton this past weekend (24/25 May).
After seeing first lap contact in race one sadly cost him a shot at Pro-Am silverware on his hugely-promising Carrera Cup GB debut at Donington Park last month, it was cruelly a repeat story at Snetterton as Jenkins saw an on-track incident deny him a shot at the class podium again.
Jenkins, who is racing as part of the coveted Wera Alliance Academy young driver programme from leading BTCC outfit Alliance Racing and Wera Tools, made the trip to Norfolk in high spirits having enjoyed a productive pre-season test at the circuit earlier this year.
The Staffordshire racer enjoyed two more positive days of running in the build-up to the event behind the wheel of his Team Parker Racing-prepared Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, increasing his pace and building up his confidence for a competitive performance over the weekend.
Jenkins certainly delivered that in qualifying on Saturday with another fantastic showcase of his one-lap pace. The 20-year-old talent charged his way to the Pro-Am class pole position for the second weekend in a row, finishing up an impressive eighth overall on the timesheets.
The Stone-based rising star produced a brilliant launch off the start-line in race one on Sunday morning, immediately propelling himself up three places to fifth overall. Further progress was on his mind as the two cars ahead began to battle and an overtaking chance opened up for him.
Unfortunately, as Jenkins went to place his Wera Tools-liveried machine down the inside into Oggies corner, a robust defensive manoeuvre from the car ahead resulted in contact. With broken steering on his Porsche the consequence, Jenkins was forced to immediately retire from proceedings.
With the race two grid based on the race one result, Jenkins faced an uphill challenge from the sixth row of the grid at the start. He once again produced a superb start though, gaining three places off the line again to settle into 12th overall and fifth in the Pro-Am class.
Tucked under the rear wing of the car ahead in the early stages of the race, the five-time Sprint Challenge GB race-winner pushed hard to forge an overtaking opportunity. It proved to be a tough race from there though, as increasing tyre wear left him holding position to the chequered flag.
Jenkins, who races with the crucial support of personal partners Hopkins Race Transporters, Asset Alliance Group, The Reefer Trailer Centre, Culina Group, Barkers Finance, The Green Group and SAF Holland, continues his 2025 Porsche Carrera Cup GB season next month at the fastest circuit in the UK, Thruxton (07/08 June).
Will Jenkins: “It’s certainly been another case of ‘what might have been’ this weekend. For the second round in a row, our pace has been clear to see with our qualifying performance and sadly an incident outside of our control has cost us the chance of converting it into good race results.
“To qualify on Pro-Am pole in my first two weekends is something I’m very proud of, and to be honest, I left a bit of time out there on Saturday so could have been higher on the grid overall. I felt we had all the ingredients needed to score some big results on Sunday.
“The start to race one couldn’t have gone any better, getting up into the top five overall, but it all went wrong from there. I’m glad we could at least salvage a few points in race two, and the weekend has been a big learning experience, which should help me going forward to Thruxton and beyond.”
